THE FOUNDATION
The Truell Charitable Foundation was established in 2005 by Edmund and Danny Truell, successful investors over a 20 year period in both private and public markets. Edmund and Danny were joined as trustees by John Loveless, former head of SG Hambros' offshore trust and private wealth business.
The Foundation’s ambition is to create a charitable endowment of £100 million which will be used to benefit a limited number of initiatives; primarily conservation of the Galapagos Islands and support for our servicemen and their families. The Foundation's objectives are much broader and from time to time other initiatives are also considered, usually linking to the above by virtue of having a UK conservation bias or armed forces support.
To achieve its aims the Foundation’s strategy is to invest the donations and loans it receives into innovative Financial Services Managers to provide a platform for the Foundation’s asset growth. Thus far the Foundation has invested in Pension Corporation, a leading provider of Pension Insurance, and Disruptive Capital Finance which manages the Sustainable Technology Fund, a £20m Enterprise Capital Fund and Tungsten Corporation PLC.
In order to start the Foundation on its path to achieving its £100 million goal the wider Truell family has gross commitments of £16 million to Pension Corporation, the first company to be backed by the Foundation. This predominantly sweet equity holding has been enhanced by further donations from partners in the Pension Corporation management. The Foundation has a direct stake in the business as well as a share of the profits on realisation. Pension Corporation now insures £5.5 billion of pensions, with 60,000 pensioners.

Two field trips have already taken place where penguins and cormorants are marked with a 'Sharpie' pen to ensure they are not recounted. The birds are fitted with a pit-tag which identifies the indvidual, tells the scientists where and when it was previously monitored, and who its partner is, and allow them to compile a historic record for each individual. October 2011: TCF wins award for outstanding support to sustainable development in the Galapagos
On the 20th October, the Consejo de Gobierno de Galápagos celebrated the second anniversary of its creation. The official ceremony, chaired by the President of the CGG and the Ministry of Environment, brought together the key stakeholders of Galapagos: Ministries, public and private institutions and relevant NGOs (eg. CDF, WWF, Aecid, PFBE, Fundar). During the event, the Consejo de Gobierno publicly thanked the collaboration and support provided by TCF in the development of the Regional Plan for the Archipelago. It must be noted that only TCF and the Spanish International Cooperation Agency (AECID) were named during this ceremony, among all the organizations and institutions currently working in the Galápagos. Felipe Cruz, Galapagos Coordinator for TCF, accepted the award below on behalf of the Foundation.

GRANT GUIDELINES
When awarding grants, the TCF Grants Committee looks for particular attributes:
support for environmentalism or our armed forces; innovative thinking; and creative application.
Our Grants Committee focus primarily on organisations which we believe best display those characteristics. The TCF does not generally fund salaries or positions for individuals, other than in its support of projects in the Galapagos; we do not provide loans; general appeals; or gap year positions. Any individual support would be funded via a grant to a charity set up for the purpose of assessing and monitoring such grants.
The TCF currently has sizeable commitments in the Galapagos Islands and further commitments to a small number of UK based charities, and therefore we are not accepting applications for grants at this point. It is, however, our intention that the Foundation will raise, through its long term investment strategy, an endowment fund to support further relevant projects in the future. There will be a notice on the website when we are accepting proposals and there will be increased detail under the grant guidelines section.
MAKE A DONATION
Currently we encourage people to donate directly to the organisations we support. As The TCF develops its own projects there will be the ability to donate directly to the Foundation. Should you wish to make a donation now, please contact us and we will assist you with the necessary paperwork.
